As populations age, understanding how older adults engage in civic life becomes increasingly important for inclusive and democratic societies. Civic engagement in later life is not a single, uniform activity—it includes a wide range of formal and informal, offline and online practices shaped by individual experiences as well as broader social structures.
In this webinar, Rodrigo Serrat explores civic engagement through a multidimensional lens, highlighting how participation in later life is influenced not only by personal motivations but also by institutional contexts and structural inequalities. Drawing on findings from the CIVEX project, the session examines how factors such as gender, health, socioeconomic status, and migrant background shape opportunities for inclusion and exclusion across different European contexts.
The webinar also reflects on the limitations of existing research, emphasizing the need to move beyond individual-level explanations and better understand the social and structural conditions that enable or constrain participation in later life.
